In collaboration with the Festival Neue Literatur (FNL) in New York, the Zeitgeist Literature Festival in Washington DC – co-organized by the Goethe-Institut Washington, the Embassy of Switzerland, and the Austrian Cultural Forum Washington – presents Strangers at Home, featuring readings and a conversation with authors Alois Hotschnig (Austria), Ariane Koch (Switzerland), and Khuê Pham (Germany)

Eleven award-winning authors from eleven countries celebrate the English translations of their latest books through readings, dialogue, and performance. Now in its 7th edition, the program explores three urgent themes:

• The Past’s Presence – how seismic historical events shape characters’ present lives

• Authoritarianism / Writing War – the language of war and its moral, political, and social ramifications

• Ties That Bind – how love, desire, and community shape our stories

The Festival Neue Literatur partners present "Recognizing the Stranger" and a conversation between the authors Khuê Pham and Monique Truong about their novels "Brothers and Ghosts" and "The Book of Salt." To mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, join us for an evening of conversation between these two renowned authors, whose works explore the tangled legacy of war across generations and its effects on the search for identity. Pham’s debut novel, "Brothers and Ghosts," follows a young woman in Berlin who uncovers family secrets rooted in the Vietnam War, revealing generational trauma and fractured loyalties, while Truong’s 2003 debut novel, "The Book of Salt," tells the story of a Vietnamese cook in 1920s Paris, entwining themes of exile, queer identity, and the legacy of colonialism.

Ein halbes Jahrhundert nach dem Ende des Vietnamkriegs spricht die Journalistin und Schriftstellerin Khuê Phạm mit dem Wissenschaftler Andreas Margara darüber, wie die Erinnerung an den Krieg bis heute Gesellschaften, Familien und Identitäten prägt. Der Krieg in Vietnam und seine Erinnerungskultur sind gekennzeichnet von unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven. In Vietnam wird das Kriegsende meist als Sieg und Befreiung gesehen, während es in den USA und für die im Ausland lebende vietnamesische Diaspora (Việt kiều) oft mit Trauma und Niederlage verbunden ist. Doch auch innerhalb dieser Gruppen gibt es individuelle Sichtweisen, die zeigen, dass Geschichte nicht allein auf Fakten beruht, sondern auch davon abhängt, wer sie erzählt und aus welchem Blickwinkel sie betrachtet wird.
